Tanya is the leader of the Gym in Beryl City, and a master of Ground Type Pokemon. Tanya is a powerful, lithe woman, with dark eyes and long black hair pulled into a ponytail. She wears a skimpier outfit, consisting of a pair of hiking shorts, hiking boots, and a tanktop with an archeologists vest over it. She is energetic and determined, and can be very competitive. Many people find her intimidating for her strength and drive. She was a good sense of humor, too. Her Pokeballs are carried in her vest. Her strongest Pokemon is her Marowak.

Tanya's gym is designed to work in perfect tandem with her Pokemon. The arena simulates a sandy wasteland, with a field of sand and intermittent rocks rising from the sand. The two trainers stand on opposite sides of the arena, which is twenty meters long and ten meters wide. It is sunken into the floor, about a meter off below the stands, with sand going down for about ten meters below the surface of the arena. There are no windows in the large arena, and the spectator stands are simple benches set back from the field by about five meters. There is no roof, leaving the arena open to the elements.

When defeated, Tanya offers the Tremble Badge, a shiny sienna circle of metal with a symbolic crack in it, indicating the trainer's triumph over the might of the earth.
